ISMPB Proudly Partners with GUINNESS®!

GUINNESS®, The Official Beer of ISMPB.

The Ian Sturrock Memorial Pipe Band is proud to announce in 2010 our partnership with Guinness®, The Official Beer of ISMPB. Local Alabama Crown rep Roger Bishop, pictured left with Pipe Major Ryan Morrison and Ian Hoppe and Nathan Tucker of Jasper Coal, has followed ISMPB since the band became a regular feature of performances of the local traditional Irish folk and rebel music band Jasper Coal. Needless to say, Roger has been enthused and impressed with our performances. Since the advent of our partnership, Guinness® has since provided us with the lovely banner above which will lead this year's Birmingham St Patrick's Day Parade scheduled for Saturday March 20th. They have also graciously supplied us with a few t-shirts to sell, but more on that later ...

Pipe Major Ryan Morrison Debut on Pipe Band CD

During the summer of 2009, Pipe Major Ryan Morrison traveled to Pensacola, Florida to participate in a three-day recording session with the Duncan McCall Pipe Band. Though Major Morrison has appeared on albums by recording artists Cynthia Douglass and Jeff Sauceda, this would be his debut recording on a pipe band album. The album even features Major Morrison in two solo tracks. The first track Major Morrison performs a solo on the Great Highland Bagpipes playing two original tunes and one tune arranged from a traditional piece of port a' bheul, Scots Gaelic for "music of the mouth". The port a' bheul is called "The Jealous Woman". The two original tunes are jigs composed by Major Morrison. The first tune is "Jig or Get Off the Pot" and the second tune is called "Binky's Jig" and is inspired by the antics of his favorite pet cat Binky. His second solo set is played on the Bellows Blown Smallpipes. The tunes are both traditional Irish tunes "March of the King of Laois" and "Dick Gossip's" arranged by Major Morrison for the Smallpipes.

The CD is available for purchase for $20.00 US. There is a limited supply, so to purchase your copy now, just contact Pipe Major Ryan Morrison at pipe.major@ismpb.com.

Learn to Play in a Pipe Band

Little can compare to the excitement of watching a Pipe Band perform ... of course, other than actually performing in a Pipe Band! The Ian Sturrock Memorial Pipe Band is not only a performance band, but we are also an educational institution. One of the goals of our band is to pass along the teaching traditions of Alabama's first piper, Ian Sturrock. Students and members receive expert tuition from renowned instructors Pipe Major Ryan Morrison and Drum Sergeant Mike Paige. Upon reaching a certain level of competency, students will undergo an evaluation and may be invited to join the band. If you would like to learn more about performing in a Pipe Band, please contact Pipe Major Ryan Morrison at info@ismpb.com.
